SnapShot- Highway Waterworks: A Confession of Musical Vulnerability
Have you ever been moved to tears by a song you've heard a thousand times before? That overwhelming physical and emotional response has a name - frisson.
In this intimate Murders to Music Snapshot, I share a deeply personal moment when Don Henley's slowed-down, contemplative version of "Boys of Summer" literally brought me to tears while driving. The experience was so powerful I could barely see the road through my tears, forcing me to pull over as the music washed over me.
The magic happened during a 2015 Howard Stern interview when Henley revealed the fascinating origin story behind his iconic hit - how the instrumental track was originally created for Tom Petty, who turned it down. When Henley performed this stripped-down version on the show, something transformative happened. A song I'd heard hundreds of times suddenly revealed new emotional depths I'd never accessed before.
This five-minute snapshot captures that raw moment, sharing both my experience and the complete performance that triggered such an unexpected response. Whether you're a longtime Eagles fan or simply curious about music's mysterious ability to bypass our rational brains and strike directly at our emotional core, you'll appreciate this exploration of how familiar songs heard through new filters can completely change our experience.
Listen now to hear this powerful rendition of "Boys of Summer" and perhaps discover your own moment of musical frisson. Have you ever had a song hit you this way? I'd love to hear your story in the comments.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to a Murders to Music Snapshot where you get five minutes of a random thought and hopefully it's entertaining, you get something out of it and I get to share something cool. So here's what we got. So the other day and before I go there, some of you guys are going to understand this right away and some of you are going to be like I am clueless to what you're talking about. Going to be like I am clueless to what you're talking about. But have you ever been just in a normal environment and you hear a song or you see a piece of art and it just you get goosebumps, the hairs on your arms stand up, the hair on the back of your neck stands up and all of a sudden you are just entrenched emotionally, you are overcome and overwhelmed with something that you don't even know what's going on, and it's just the way that song hits you, it takes you to a special place and it just shakes you from the core. There's a word for that. It's called frisson. It's a French word that means shrill or shiver, and it's essentially you're having an emotional reaction to a piece of art or music or some kind of stimuli. Well, that happened to me the other day.
Speaker 1:I'm driving down the road minding my own business and there's YouTube scrolling in the background just playing different songs and stuff that I listen to when I go down the road, and in one of these songs it comes up with an interview between Don Henley and Howard Stern back in 2015. And if you don't know, I'm a huge Don Henley fan. Don Henley, the Eagles they are absolutely amazing. They absolutely are just awesome. And if I could, I would give anything to meet Don Henley, hang out with him, and I don't idolize anybody, but he is freaking amazing and he's just awesome. So anyway, in this interview he's talking about the song boys of summer and he gets asked hey, do you like this song? What is you know? Tell me the history. And Don is like you know, this is an amazing song. It's one of my favorites. In fact, this track for this song, the music, was written for Tom Petty, but Tom Petty declined to put anything behind it. So Don took it and he wrote the lyrics to Boys of Summer and we've all heard that song a thousand times. It's been around for 40 years, 45 years now, and the song is great in its own right, but when Don played it on the show.
Speaker 1:He played a more contemplative version of it where he slowed things way down and it completely changed it. Right, you can see or hear something the same way a thousand times, but sometime, when you hear it through a different filter, a different lens, all of a sudden completely different. And that's what this was. I'm driving down the road and I start bawling. I absolutely start crying, like I don't know where these tears are coming from. I'm blurry eyed, I can't drive. I mean it's just. I'm like I don't know where these tears are coming from. I'm blurry eyed, I can't drive. I mean it's just.
Speaker 1:It hit me in a way that I can't even explain. And it was pretty awesome. And I know you guys have probably never heard the song the way it's about to be played, but I want to play it for you. I don't know if it hits you the same way or not. Maybe you won't even like it, maybe you're even going to turn this off, I don't know, and it doesn't matter. I want to share this moment with you. It was pretty freaking awesome for me. I love the song. The song is great. It's a different version. Here it is and, ladies and gentlemen, that is a murders to music. Snapshot Music guitar solo.
Speaker 3:Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach. I feel it in the air. The summer's out of reach. Empty lake, empty streets. The sun goes down alone. I'm driving by your house, though I know you're not home. I can see you, your brown skin shining in the sun. You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on.
Speaker 3:Babe, I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone. I'll never forget those nights. I wonder if it was a dream. Remember how you made me crazy. Remember how I made you scream. I don't understand what happened to our love. Babe, I want to get you back. I'm going to show you what I'm made of.
Speaker 3:I can see you, your brown skin shining in the sun. I see you walking real slow, smiling at everyone. I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone gone, thank you. I don't know. I thought I knew what love was. What did I know? Those days are gone forever. I should just let them go. But I can see you, the brown skin shining in the sun. You got the top pulled out Ready your way. You got the top pulled out Ready. You'll win. I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone. And I can see you, your brown skin shining in the sun. You got that hair slipped back and the wayfarers on me. I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone. Thank you.
